Recently, VesselsValue, a global shipping online valuation and market intelligence provider, released the latest ranking of the top 10 shipowner countries/regions (in terms of assets), and the overall ranking has not changed much, with Japan still topping the list with a total fleet asset value of more than $200 billion, and China ranking a close second.

In terms of ranking, the top three are Japan (US $206.389 billion), China (US $204.01 billion), Greece (US $169.391 billion),4-6 are the United States (US $99.862 billion), Singapore (US $85.654 billion), and South Korea (US $67.018 billion), ranking 7-10 compared to 2022 In the previous edition in November, there were big changes, with Norway ($59.344 billion) and the United Kingdom ($53.832 billion) surpassing Germany ($49.486 billion) in seventh and eighth place, Germany slipping from seventh to ninth, and Hong Kong ($44.715 billion) surpassing Switzerland in tenth place.

The total value of Japanese fleet assets increased by about 5% from the previous list in November 2022. VesselsValue said Japan has invested heavily in the tanker industry, adding nearly 100 ships to its fleet. Thanks to the higher market, the total value of tanker fleet assets increased by approximately 15.5%. Meanwhile, the country has the highest total value of LNG and LPG fleet assets at $37.8 billion and $13.4 billion respectively, with the number of LNG and LPG vessels reaching 202 and 344. In addition, Japan also has the largest and highest total asset value automotive transport fleet, with 334 vessels and a total asset value of $22.9 billion. According to VesselsValue, China remains number one in terms of global fleet numbers, with 6,084 vessels. China ranks first in both the number of bulk carrier ships and the total value of assets, and has the largest number of oil tankers and container ships, with 1,576 and 1,011, respectively, with total assets of $47.4 billion and $42.6 billion. As a result of the market downturn, while the number of vessels in the container fleet grew, the total value of assets fell by 23.8%.

October 2022 ranking, Source :VesselsValue Greece continues to rank third in terms of fleet volume and total value of assets.

At the same time, the country is the second largest LNG fleet owner with 143 vessels and a total fleet asset value of $31.1 billion. Among other countries/regions, countries ranked 4-8 showed stable performance. Germany, with the majority of its fleet made up of container ships, slipped to ninth. Hong Kong entered the list after receiving significant investment in bulk carriers, which account for more than a quarter of the total value of Hong Kong's fleet assets.
