The Port of Singapore completes the world's first ammonia bunker fueling
Date:2024-03-19 Readers:
A Singapore flag ship has successfully added liquid ammonia as Marine fuel in the Port of Singapore, becoming the world's first dual-fuel ammonia-powered ship, and the Port of Singapore has also become the world's first port to complete ammonia fuel refueling.

The Singapore-flagged Fortescue Green is being built with the support of Singapore's maritime Authority, government agencies, research institutes and industry partners, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Fortescue, the Australian energy and iron ore group, said in a joint statement on March 15 Through the existing ammonia facility on Jurong Island, Pioneer's vessels successfully completed the world's first use of liquid ammonia combined with diesel as a Marine fuel.

At the same time as completing the ammonia fuel trials,Fortescue Green Pioneer also received the "Gas Fuel ammonia" certification from the Singapore Shipping Registry and DNV, the world's leading certification and risk management agency, to blend ammonia with diesel for use as Marine fuel.

Commonly used in agriculture and industry, ammonia is a chemical made by combining nitrogen from the air with hydrogen. As a carrier of hydrogen, ammonia can be transported to demand centers for power generation or used as an ocean fuel to support the energy transition.

The seven-week trial on the Fortescue Green Pioneer, Singapore's first ammonia fuel trial, included testing the vessel's ammonia storage system, supporting piping, gas fuel delivery system, modified engines and seaworthiness.

The success of the trial is an important milestone in Singapore's development of multi-fuel refuelling capabilities to support the digitalisation and decarbonisation of the international shipping industry. The ability to collaborate to collectively support such trials also demonstrates that Singapore has a convenient regulatory environment, strong research capabilities, and a labor-management ecosystem that can support the testing and expansion of new Marine fuels.
