Recently, French shipping company TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) announced an order for 6 additional sail-powered cargo vessels at French shipyard Piriou, which are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.
TOWT had previously ordered the first two Phoenix-class sail-powered cargo vessels at the Piriou shipyard in 2022, and the two new vessels are due to be delivered this summer. The series is said to be 81 metres long with a cargo capacity of 1,100 tonnes and can operate at sea for 320 days per year. In addition to wind as the main power source, the vessels will be equipped with two turbocharged four-stroke marine diesel engines. A single command deck on the bridge and its ergonomic design will allow the officer of the watch to carry out all commands and course adjustment manoeuvres single-handedly.
With the addition of the latest six vessels, TOWT is expected to have "the world's largest fleet of sail-powered cargo ships" by 2027, and the company is increasing capacity to meet the huge demand for zero-carbon shipping.
Diana Mesa, Co-Founder and Managing Director of TOWT, and Guillaume LeGrand, Co-Founder and President of TOWT, said: "After two years of intense work, we are very pleased and proud to have taken this important step in TOWT's history. With the construction of six new sail-powered cargo vessels, our fleet will increase to eight, thus consolidating our position as a pioneer in sailing cargo transport. A concrete and ambitious response to the growing demand for decarbonised shipping, this expansion reinforces our commitment to a sustainable future of shipping. This is just the beginning and we intend to continue our momentum even further."
TOWT has been specialising in sail-powered cargo ship transport since 2011. By building the Phoenix-class sail-powered cargo ships, it will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 95 per cent compared to fossil fuel-powered container ships.TOWT says the eight Phoenix-class sail-powered cargo ships will be able to transport approximately 200,000 tonnes of cargo, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 40,000 tonnes.
TOWT has already finalised the first charter contracts for the first two sail-powered cargo vessels, Anemos and Artemis, to be delivered this year.
