Southampton docks 2 of the largest box ships afloat
Date:2024-05-09 Readers:

FOR the first time in its history, the Port of Southampton had docked two of the world's largest container vessels simultaneously, reports London area WorldCargo News.

This saw the port's marine pilots expertly guide two ultra-large containerships into DP World's SCT 2/3 berth.

Previously, such a task was only undertaken at the SCT 5 berth, making this achievement a testament to precision and teamwork.

Associated British Ports (ABP) made strategic investments in widening the channel within the Western Docks.

This development facilitated the passage of the largest container vessels and empowered ABP Marine Pilots to navigate ultra-large vessels to various berths within DP World's container terminal.

Southampton harbour master Steve Masters commended the team's expertise and dedication and emphasized the safety and efficiency with which the operation was executed.

The pilots and tug crews underwent thorough training and simulation exercises to master the intricate manoeuvres required for CAT 7 Vessels like the MV Manila Express.

Captains Noel Charlton and Chris Hoyle, who pilot the Manila Express (measuring 400 metres in length, 61 metres in width, and boasting a capacity of 23,660 TEU), reflected on the journey leading up to this historic moment.

They credited the successful berthing to close collaboration with the vessel's captain and crew.

As the UK's second-largest container port, the Port of Southampton benefits from a unique double tide, providing 17 hours of high tides and offering flexibility in scheduling arrivals and departures.

This latest accomplishment underscores the Port's commitment to innovation and operational excellence in the maritime industry.
