Russian media: Novorossiysk harbour attacked overnight

According to a new report by the authoritative Russian news channel Astra, in the early hours of 17 May, the important port city of Novorossiysk, located on the Black Sea coast, suffered a combined drone and missile attack, and its fuel oil terminals were the target of the attack, which resulted in explosions and power outages. The port of Novorossiysk is known to be the largest oil exporting port in Russia, with a capacity of 85,000 tonnes of oil tankers.

Late at night, residents of Novorossiysk were awakened by a series of explosions. According to local residents, they heard at least eight deafening explosions that night. Video footage circulating on social media of drone and air defence activity.

According to initial reports, a missile struck the port of Novorossiysk, sparking a fire. The attack was not limited to the fuel oil terminal, the city's oil infrastructure was also damaged to varying degrees. Both the Novorossiysk fuel oil terminal and the terminal of the oil transport company became victims of the attack.

Russian media outlet VchK-OGPU reported that the drones struck not only the fuel oil terminal, but also the Transneft terminal, causing fires to spread rapidly in the terminal area. During the attack, the entire city of Novorossiysk lost power.

It is noteworthy that the British Ministry of Defence reported as early as 31 March that Russia was strengthening its fortifications at the port of Novorossiysk with the intention of protecting its Black Sea fleet from a possible Ukrainian attack.
