Recently, Hanwha Marine (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine) held a christening ceremony for the 23,600 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel ultra-large container vessel Damietta Express, which was built for German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd.
‘With a length of 400 metres, a beam of 61 metres and a capacity of 23,600 TEUs, Damietta Express is the fifth vessel in Hapag-Lloyd's Express series.
In December 2022, Hapag-Lloyd ordered six 23,600 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel containerships from Hanwha Offshore & Marine for delivery in 2023, and six months later the German shipowner placed an order for an additional six vessels of the same type with a value of US$1 billion for delivery in 2024. The last vessel in the series is expected to be completed and delivered on 31 December 2024, Hapag-Lloyd said.
Hapag-Lloyd said that the series of containerships uses a new dual-fuel technology that allows the use of non-fossil fuels, such as biomethane and e-methane, and produces virtually no carbon dioxide emissions during operation. The use of LNG reduces CO2 emissions by 15 to 25 per cent and soot emissions by 95 per cent compared to conventional marine fuels. In addition, advanced technologies such as optimised hulls and highly efficient propellers will help the vessels to reduce fuel consumption, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
