In response to congestion, Port of Singapore reopens old wharf
Date:2024-06-04 Readers:
Port of Singapore Group (PSA) in order to ease congestion, re-opened the abandoned Keppel Terminal (Keppel Terminal) old berths and yards, but also increased a large number of manpower to deal with the container backlog problem. After these measures, the port of Singapore can handle weekly container volume increased from 770,000 TEU to 820,000 TEU.

In addition to the existing eight berths at Tuas Port, three new berths are expected to be opened within this year, and the Port of Singapore Group has plans to accelerate the opening of these new berths to increase overall container handling capacity.

According to consultancy Linerlytica, port congestion is once again plaguing the consolidation market, with the Port of Singapore becoming the latest bottleneck. Some 2 million TEU of global capacity is stranded outside ports, equivalent to 6.8 per cent of global container ship capacity. Global port congestion in Asia is the most serious, was stuck in the capacity of Southeast Asian ports accounted for 26%, Northeast Asian ports accounted for 23%. Linerlytica pointed out that the congestion has forced some shipping companies to cancel the scheduled port of Singapore berthing plan, is estimated to exacerbate the problem of downstream ports, which will have to deal with the extra containers.

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) report pointed out that the recent surge in Singapore port loading and unloading volume is mainly due to the Red Sea crisis after the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope, shipping delays, in order to catch up with the next schedule, reduce the number of ports of call, Southeast Asian countries will focus on unloading goods in Singapore, the ship docking time for loading and unloading is also thus elongated.

Since the beginning of 2024, there has been a significant increase in the number of vessels arriving in Singapore. In the first four months of this year, the port of Singapore completed a total of 13.36 million TEU of container throughput, up 8.8 per cent year-on-year. Delays and increased container throughput of container vessels in Singapore have resulted in longer waiting times for berths for container vessels.

Currently Shanghai, Qingdao, Klang, Colombo and other Asian ports are also congested. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world's largest liner shipping company, has begun to utilise Indian ports for transhipment operations.

Before the outbreak of the Red Sea crisis, on 13 October 2023, the container freight index (SCFI) published by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange was 891.55 points, and on Friday (31 May) it had risen to 3,044.77 points, which is 3.42 times that of the pre-Red Sea crisis.
