Shanghai port's first bulk carrier anchorage LNG refuelling operation completed
Date:2024-06-12 Readers:
In the afternoon of June 10th, after 18 hours, under the remote monitoring of Wusong Maritime Administration's Vessel Traffic Management Centre and the on-site guarding of ‘Sea Patrol 012’, the LNG refuelling vessel ‘Harbour Future’ successfully completed the ship-to-ship refuelling operation of about 5,300 cubic metres of LNG to the vessel ‘Mount Aconcagua’. Mount Aconcagua’ about 5,300 cubic metres of LNG at sea “ship to ship” refuelling operation was successfully completed. This marks the successful completion of the first dual-fuel powered bulk carrier LNG refuelling operation at anchorage of Shanghai Port. Up to now, Shanghai Port has completed 13 LNG fuel refuelling operations at Lvhuashan South Anchorage, with a refuelling volume of over 45,955 cubic meters.

The refuelling operation coincided with the peak period of cyclone activities in Jianghuai, and the gusty winds and strong convective weather posed a greater threat to the safety of the two vessels' navigation and berthing and refuelling operations, and also brought more difficulties due to the long time of refuelling and the overnight operation.

In order to ensure the successful completion of the refuelling operation, Wusong Maritime Safety Bureau held a risk study and coordination meeting with the relevant enterprises and representatives of the ship at the first time, established a special night safety management and security programme and emergency plan, formed a targeted water safety supervision and service system, and implemented a supervision and service model in the surrounding waters through the supervision and service mode of ‘remote supervision by VTS + on-site inspection by the sea patrol brigade’. Through the ‘VTS remote supervision + sea patrol brigade on-site inspection’ supervision and service mode, on-site control of the surrounding waters is implemented to ensure the safety and efficiency of the whole process of LNG water refuelling at the anchorage ‘before, during and after’.

Next, the maritime department will continue to improve the level of supervision and service, and continuously enhance the ability to guarantee the supply of fuel for international shipping refuelling at Shanghai Port and the comprehensive service guarantee ability of the port, so as to contribute to the green and low-carbon transformation of the shipping industry and the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Centre.
