The world's first methanol dual-fuel conversion boat is here!
Date:2024-06-24 Readers:
With the whistle sounding at Changbai Island, Zhoushan Dinghai, the world's first methanol dual-fuel container vessel "ECO UMANDE" was successfully delivered and launched for sea trial at 11:15 on 23 June. This marks the successful completion of the methanol dual-fuel conversion of the world's first container ship in operation. The delivery ceremony was hosted by DNV China's Deputy Managing Director, Mr Gu Xiaoli, and was witnessed by a number of important guests, including Khairul Bashar, Newbuilding Manager of X-Press Feeders China, Xu Gang, Vice Chairman of Sumida Shipbuilding, and Li Yuanlong, Deputy Managing Director of Sinopacific Offshore & Marine.

"ECO UMANDE, a 1,170 TEU feeder vessel owned by Singaporean shipowner X-Press Feeders, was completed at the beginning of March this year at Xindayang Shipbuilding, and then entrusted to SINOPACIFIC OFFSHORE in Zhoushan for the methanol dual fuel conversion at the beginning of this year, and entered the yard officially on 25th March. The construction was officially started on 25th March.

The ECO UMANDE, with an overall length of 148 metres, a beam of 27.2 metres and a depth of 14.3 metres, is equipped with the 5S50ME methanol dual-fuel engine developed by MAN Energy Solutions. When using green methanol as fuel, the vessel demonstrates zero carbon emission capability and meets the requirements of EEDI Stage III and Tier III, which significantly improves the vessel's safety, low emission and environmental performance.

The project covers the installation of 7 systems, including methanol fuel system, nitrogen system, bilge water system between methanol equipment rooms, methanol tank ventilation and sweeping system, LFSS instrument air system and foam system, as well as the modification of 8 systems, including the original ship's CO2 system, the whole ship's air measurement system, the nacelle water supply system, the high- and low-temperature fresh water cooling system, the compressed air system, the control air system, the fire-fighting water system and the ventilation system. Modification.

It is worth mentioning that X-Press Feeders has ordered a total of 14 methanol dual-fuel containerships from various shipyards in China. Among them, four 950 TEU containerships signed with Sumida Shipbuilding (Xindayang Shipbuilding) as the first batch of orders, following Maersk, becoming the first shipowner to follow its footsteps in building methanol dual-fuel containerships.

This methanol dual-fuel conversion ship project is not only the first case in China, but also the first methanol conversion project of DNV classification society. Shipowner, shipyard and classification society have paid high attention and investment to this project. From business negotiation, contract signing to production design, quality planning, production preparation to ship construction and delivery, all parties have actively participated and closely cooperated with each other, which ensured the orderly progress and successful completion of the project.
