According to foreign media reports, at about 9:00 am local time on Tuesday, the cargo ship "Baltic Arrow" on its way to the port of Wisbech due to the narrow channel of the inland waterway caused the ship to be trapped, the hull of the ship stuck in the middle of the river.
According to MarineTraffic, the world's leading ship-tracking website, the vessel was scheduled to depart from Brunsbuettel, Germany, bound for the east of England. Video footage of the incident, in which the captain of the 80-metre-long vessel reported "running aground", shows the vessel stuck in a slumped position in the river.
The cargo vessel is said to be flying the flag of St Kitts and Nevis, with a crew of six and two local pilots on board. There are no reports of injuries or property damage.
In Cambridge, personnel at the scene observed a small red tugboat endeavouring to try and push or pull the freighter out of the riverbank, but were unsuccessful.
The incident drew analogies to the 2021 blockage of the Suez Canal, when the massive container ship Ever Given was blocked in the vital waterway for nearly a week, causing billions of dollars in losses to global trade.
A spokesman for the port said the incident was a "rare occurrence" and that, given that the tide was now out, they planned to wait "for the vessel to float naturally at the next high tide and then use additional tugs to assist in freeing it from the riverbank". In the meantime, they will conduct a full investigation to find out exactly why the vessel ran aground.
An official statement reads, "Given that the tide is out, we plan to wait for the next high tide and with the assistance of additional tugs, free the vessel from the bank and subsequently guide it safely into Wisbech Harbour."
