China's waterway freight sets record, highlighting infrastructure growth
Date:2024-06-27 Readers:

China's water transportation sector achieved a historic milestone in 2023, handling over 9 billion metric tons of cargo, according to Vice Transport Minister Fu Xuyin.

Fu spoke at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, highlighting the waterway transportation sector's "sustained and rapid development" in recent years. He emphasized that 2023 marked the first time cargo tonnage exceeded 9 billion tons.

The positive trend continues in 2024, with waterway freight volume reaching 3.86 billion tons between January and May. This represents a year-on-year increase of 7 percent. Fu also pointed to robust growth in container throughput at ports, exceeding 130 million containers in the first five months, reflecting an 8.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.

China's commitment to developing its waterway infrastructure remains strong. Fixed asset investment in waterway construction reached 78.6 billion yuan ($10.57 billion) from January to May, signifying a 7.2 percent year-on-year increase.

Fu also announced plans to hold forums and other activities in Tianjin to celebrate China's 20th Maritime Day, which falls on July 11. This national event recognizes the significance of the maritime industry to China's economy and global trade.
