Maersk notes low sea levels in Amazon River reducing drafts
Date:2024-07-04 Readers:

DANISH shipping giant Maersk is carrying out extensive mapping, research, and monitoring of the Amazon River levels, reports London's Port Technology Internationnal.

Based on information recorded by the National Water Agency's (ANA) standards and continual study of the evolution of the Amazon Rive's ebb levels in the region, Maersk determined that the Negro River has not increased since June 17.
This suggests that vessel drafts may be restricted during the dry season, which runs from 15 September 2024 until early 2025.
As a result, Maersk has declared that it is working on alternative options to minimise the impact on its customers' operations, maintaining the smooth movement of goods to and from Manaus during this time.
Maersk also said it would continue to monitor the situation and that it intends to share solutions and products with the market in July.
To minimise the effect during the most critical period, Maersk is urging its clients to plan ahead of time for the transportation of commodities to and from Manaus.

Recently, Maersk's second big vessel capable of running on green methanol arrived in Koper (Slovenia) for the first time.
