The British Columbia Shipbuilding and International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in Canada has issued a 72-hour strike notice to Dubai Global Ports Group Canada (DP World Canada), according to foreign media reports. The International Longshore and Wharfage Union No. 514 said in a statement late on Friday that it had given formal written notice to its employers. The strike action began on 8 July local time.
The association said this is despite the fact that the Industrial Relations Commission of Canada will begin hearings this week to resolve complaints received by the association and the union. However, the association has still given notice to strike. The hearings are scheduled to continue next month.
In June, the ILWU said , 99 per cent of Canada's 584 dockworkers rejected the employers' association's final offer in a vote.
Last December, DP World Canada gave the union notice of its plans to unilaterally introduce a series of automation measures at the rail intermodal yard at Vancouver's Port Centerm.
For its part, the union says another major unresolved issue is increasing retirement allowances and benefits for employees.
The strike action, if it goes ahead as planned, will have a significant impact on DP World Canada's operations, which could include delays in cargo handling, transport and supply chain.
