CHINA's Ministry of Commerce and eight other government agencies issued a document encouraging cross-border e-commerce companies to build overseas warehouses, reports Caixin.
The move is the most recent out of a series of policies that support the construction of overseas warehouses to boost the globalisation of China's e-commerce in the face of slowing demand.
Government plans have regularly highlighted the importance of warehouses outside China. For example, a central government work report delivered by then-Premier Li Keqiang in 2016 identified building overseas-based warehouses as a key part of Beijing's strategy to expand export volumes and offset an economic slowdown.
In recent years, the overseas warehousing model has gained popularity among Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms as it enables faster order fulfilment and allows merchants to sell larger items that were previously sold in limited quantities due to air freight constraints.
