After 441 days of detention, this tanker was finally released
Date:2024-07-15 Readers:
The Suezmax tanker Advantage Sweet, which was seized by the Iranian military in April 2023, is now leaving Iranian waters.

According to VesselFinder, the vessel has left Iranian waters and is now heading south into the Arabian Sea.

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Advantage Sweet crossed the Strait of Hormuz and was seized by the Iranian navy in April 2023 while carrying $50 million worth of oil from Kuwait for Chevron.

There has been no official statement from either Iran or the charterer regarding the decision to move the vessel.

The last major Iranian seizure of tankers since 2019 occurred in May 2022, when Iran seized two Greek tankers until November of that year.

Since then, Yemeni Houthi militants have launched a series of attacks targeting ships in the Red Sea corridor during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip.

A new US military report says the Houthis may have fired an Iranian-made anti-ship cruise missile at a Norwegian-flagged tanker in the Red Sea in December last year, an attack that proves the Houthi group's links to Iran.

Until today there are five merchant ships detained in Iran, leaving more than 80 seafarers unable to return home for months.

Advantage Sweet's movements seem to coincide with the conclusions of Iranian state media reports of a court case related to the tanker.

It comes after an Iranian court on Thursday ordered the US government to pay more than $6.7bn in damages after a Swedish company stopped supplying special dressings and bandages for people suffering from a rare skin condition following sanctions imposed by Washington on the Islamic Republic.

Following the ruling, Iranian authorities said they would unload about $50 million worth of crude oil from Advantage Sweet, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

The report did not specify whether Iran's seizure of the oil from the tanker would contribute to any compensation for the patients.

On Thursday, an Iranian court issued a final ruling on the case, ordering the U.S. government and officials to pay $6.8 billion in sanctions costs, according to Iran's judiciary, Mizan News Agency.

The $6.7bn order was filed on behalf of 300 plaintiffs, including family members of the victims as well as the physically and emotionally impaired, a report said.

IRNA said about 20 patients died after the Swedish company's decision.
