Shipping giant strikes again! 12-ship, $2.67bn order finalised!
Date:2024-07-17 Readers:
Recently, French shipping giant Duffy Line (CMA CGM) has once again demonstrated its strong market influence. The company is said to have ordered as many as 12 LNG dual-fuel large container ship newbuildings, a deal with a total value of nearly $2.67 billion.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) announced on Monday that they have signed a contract with a European shipping giant for the construction of 12 new container ships. Although HD KSOE did not directly disclose the name of the buyer or the type of fuel, according to several shipbuilding industry sources, the liner giant, which is ranked third in the world, is the owner behind the series of neo-Panamax vessels. The contract is worth a whopping 36.83 trillion won (equivalent to $2.665 billion), implying a value of $222 million per vessel.

According to further disclosure from the source, Duffy Line has officially ordered the 15,500 TEU newbuild container ships. And, the vessels will be powered by both LNG dual-fuel technology.

The two subsidiaries, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho, will build six vessels each and plan to complete the delivery of all vessels by June 2028, HD KSOE said.

Just last month, news broke on Duffy Line's part that it plans to order new Panamax containerships. The owner is said to have signed a letter of intent with Hyundai Shipbuilding for 12 16,000 TEU and eight 8,000 TEU vessels with a total value of at least $3.5bn.

However, there is still some uncertainty regarding the order status of the 8,000 TEU vessels. Some shipbrokers said that the talks between Duffy and Hyundai Shipbuilding are still continuing. However, some brokers believe that Duffy Line may eventually choose to charter vessels from independent container ship owners in order to more flexibly adjust the size of its fleet.

It is worth noting that this is Duffy Line's first large vessel order this year. The company has reportedly signed four newbuilding containership order agreements for 2023, with a total value of up to about $6.5 billion. The orders include a dozen 13,000 TEU vessels from Hyundai Samho Shipyard, six 15,000 TEU containerships from Jiangnan Shipyard, 10 24,000 TEU vessels from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and eight 9,200 TEU vessels from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard. All of these ships have adopted dual-fuel technology, which allows them to use either LNG or methanol as fuel, thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions and environmental pollution.

In addition, earlier this month, Duffy Steamships announced that it had taken on a charter for eight 18,000 TEU container ships ordered by East Pacific Shipping (EPS) at Jiangsu New Era Shipyard. The cost of each vessel exceeds $200 million, which will undoubtedly further increase the size of Duffy's fleet and enhance its transport capacity.

These orders bring Duffy's newbuilding backlog to more than 1 million slots, second only to MSC, and it is expected that Duffy will soon overtake Maersk in the global liner rankings.
