Escalation of fighting! Airstrike on Yemen's largest port!
Date:2024-07-23 Readers:
On the afternoon of 20 local time, Hodeidah, controlled by Houthi forces in Yemen, was hit by an airstrike by Israeli warplanes. According to the local health authorities, the air strike has so far caused at least six deaths, three people are missing and 83 people have been injured, some of whom are in serious condition. The airstrike also caused a huge explosion and fire in the harbour area, and the port of Hodeidah suspended operations after the airstrike.

The port of Hodeidah is one of Yemen's largest and most important ports, currently under the control of the Houthis, and is burdened with importing and supplying food, fuel, and other livelihood goods to densely populated areas across Yemen's north. More than two-thirds of Yemen's population rely to some extent on the port of Hodeidah for their daily necessities.

Local time on the 22nd, Yemen's "Red Sea Port Authority" said that the port of Hodeidah has resumed work, and "full capacity".

It is learnt that a month ago, the cargo ship "TUTOR" (IMO: 9942627) was attacked by Yemeni Houthi forces near the port of Hodeidah. The vessel was operated by a Greek shipping company. The exact location of the attack was approximately 67.7 nautical miles from Hodeidah, when the vessel was struck by a small boat loaded with explosives. The boat exploded at the rear of the vessel, causing the hull of the vessel to break up and take on water. The freighter is currently out of control and taking on water.
