August's latest global liner capacity ranking! MSC is riding high, while Duffy and Starfish are jumping up!
Date:2024-08-05 Readers:
According to the latest data released by Alphaliner, as of August 2, the number of container ships in operation in the world totalled 7,038, with a total capacity of 30.386 million TEU, equivalent to about 360 million DWT.

Among them, the top three global liner company capacity is Mediterranean Shipping Company (6.022 million TEU, accounting for 20%), Maersk Line (4.362 million TEU, accounting for 14.5%) and Duffy Line (3.785 million TEU, accounting for 12.5%), the three major liner companies total capacity accounted for 47% of the global market.

Alphaliner noted that the 4th to 10th place in terms of capacity are, in order, COSCO Shipping Group, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Net Link Shipping (ONE), Evergreen Marine, Han Shin Shipping, EStar Shipping and Yang Ming Shipping. The capacity of the top 7 is more than 1.5 million TEU.

The 11th to 20th ranked liner carriers are: Wan Hai Shipping, Taiping Shipping, SITC International, X-Press Feeders Group, Koryo Marine Transportation (KMTC), UniFeeder, Iran Air (IRISL), Sea Lead Shipping, Changjin Merchant Marine and Dexiang Marine.

Among the Chinese mainland liner companies on the list, COSCO Shipping Container Lines ranked 4th, SITC International ranked 13th, Zhongguo Xinliang Shipping ranked 22nd, Antong Holding (Quanzhou Ansheng Shipping) ranked 24th, Ningbo COSCO ranked 25th, Tangshan Port Heder Shipping ranked 30th, Shanghai Jinjiang Shipping ranked 31st, Sinotrans Container Lines ranked 34th, China United Shipping ranked 38th. Yangpu Xinyuan Shipping ranked 46th.

According to Alphaliner's data, aggressive newbuilding orders and acquisitions of second-hand vessels have put MSC at the top of the global capacity list, with a total capacity of more than 6 million TEU and a total of 846 vessels in operation, of which 546 are owned and 300 chartered in. In addition, MSC also holds 100 newbuilding orders totalling 1.205 million TEU (Breaking 6 million TEU! The world's No.1 MSC, with a double harvest of fleet size and self-managed services!) MSC is the world's No.1 MSC in terms of fleet size and self-service!

The second-ranked Maersk's current total capacity is about 580,000 TEU ahead of the third-ranked Duffy Line, but the gap between the two sides has gradually narrowed, and Maersk has to face the threat of being overtaken by Duffy Line within a few years.

In terms of newbuilding orders, Maersk currently holds 29 ships, totalling 375,000 TEU; in comparison, Duffy holds 89 ships, totalling 1,146,000 TEU, second only to MSC's 1,205,000 TEU, and once these vessels under construction are completed and delivered, Duffy will overtake Maersk to become the second-largest liner shipping company in the world.

At the same time, Duffy's recent receipt of a series of new ships has also accelerated its capacity expansion. In the first half of this year, Hudong-Zhonghua for the Duffy Maritime LNG dual-fuel 13,000 TEU container ship series No. 5 ship ‘CMA CGM BELEM’ was delivered; May 22, Jiangnan Shipbuilding for the replica of its LNG dual-fuel 15,000 TEU container ship series of the third ship ‘CMA CGM GRACE BAY’ was delivered (the third vessel named and delivered, Duffy took over another 15,000 TEU dual-fuel container ship), and in September, all six vessels of this series will be delivered.

At the same time, Maersk's desire for newbuilding does not seem to be strong, this year only to exercise the option signed last year with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore 4 + 4 + 2 93,000 cubic metres VLAC, a total of 6 additional VLAC ($ 238 million, 2 VLAC! Annual order target has been completed by more than 90%!) ; meanwhile Maersk, a staunch green methanol chooser, has recently turned to LNG and plans to self-build and charter at least 23 LNG dual-fuel container ships. According to Trade Winds, Maersk plans to build a fleet of at least 23 LNG dual-fuel vessels and has issued a request for proposals to shipbuilders for the construction of 12 vessels of about 16,000 TEU, while it has signed time charters for at least 11 new LNG dual-fuel containerships with two owners from a Chinese shipyard.

It is also worth noting that Star Line overtook Yang Ming Marine to become the world's ninth largest liner shipping company, while Yang Ming Marine dropped to tenth place.

The reason for this is that Zim is committed to long-term chartering more ships to help its capacity grow rapidly. Alphaliner data shows that Zim's current total capacity is 129 ships/739,000 TEU, of which 117 ships/674,000 TEU are chartered, accounting for 91.1 per cent of its total capacity.

In addition, Star Line has recently taken delivery of several newbuildings, the 7,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels ZIM PEARL, ZIM RUBY and ZIM SAPPHIRE. ZIM PEARL’, “ZIM RUBY” and “ZIM SAPPHIRE” were delivered in the first half of this year, and the naming ceremonies of “ZIM Topaz” and “ZIM Spinel” were held on 22 July (grand naming of ZIM Topaz & ZIM Spinel). ZIM Topaz’ and “ZIM Spinel” were also named on 22nd July (ZIM Topaz & ZIM Spinel grand naming ceremony), and the addition of these newbuildings has also contributed to the growth of Star Shipping's capacity.
