NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, a subsidiary of Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen (NYK), has recently reached a basic agreement with Kambara Kisen of Japan, which will charter a methanol dual-fuel powered Ultramax bulk carrier on a time charter basis.
The 200-metre long, 65,700-tonne deadweight bulk carrier under charter is currently under construction at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Japan and is expected to be delivered in the spring of 2025, when it will become the first methanol-dual fuel-powered bulk carrier operated by Nippon Yusen for the transport of a wide range of cargoes, including grains and ores.
The vessel is equipped with dual-fuel main engines that can run on both methanol fuel and conventional marine fuel, with bio-methanol and e-methanol (produced using hydrogen extracted from renewable energy sources and recycled carbon dioxide) expected to serve as the main fuels.
In addition, Kambara Kisen has entered into a time charter contract for a methanol dual-fuel powered bulk carrier with MOL Drybulk, a subsidiary of another Japanese shipping giant, Merrill Mitsui, which is expected to be delivered in 2027.
By using low-carbon methanol as fuel, Nippon Yusen said it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote decarbonisation of its fleet and achieve cleaner transport. With this goal in mind, Nippon Yusen recently joined forces with Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) to promote the safe use of marine fuels such as biofuels, methanol, and low-carbon or zero-carbon ammonia through a phased approach.
