Maersk: This year's peak container shipping season will come early
Date:2024-08-28 Readers:
According to Trade Winds, Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk (AP Moller-Maersk) pointed out in its latest report on the European market that the annual peak season for container transport is expected to kick off earlier this year. According to the report, recent observations show that the traditional peak season in Europe will come significantly earlier than in previous years due to a number of potential factors.

Maersk further explained, ‘We have observed that companies have strategically shipped their cargoes to European shores earlier in order to prevent possible future supply chain disruptions. At the same time, increased consumer spending has further fuelled strong demand growth.’

As geopolitics has continued to affect international trade in recent years, shipping companies have become increasingly keen to ensure that cargoes are delivered to customers on time. According to Maersk, given the impact that the widespread disruption experienced on major trade routes has had on sea freight rates and capacity, companies are eager to lock in slots as early as possible to ensure that they are able to maintain the necessary inventory levels in their target markets.

As the summer holiday season continues across Europe, Maersk is facing labour shortages at several of its hubs and terminals. The company said its teams continue to observe limited operational impact and will be monitoring the situation closely, while maintaining close contact with terminal authorities across the continent.

While Maersk's Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam is currently operating normally, some of Maersk's westbound vessels to Europe are experiencing delays due to weather disruptions near the Cape of Good Hope. Maersk said in response, ‘In order to mitigate any further disruption (of the delays) to route operations and other vessels, our team is working at full capacity to ensure route reliability and endeavouring to eliminate the knock-on negative impact these delays may have on our European services.’

For the Hutchinson Port Delta II terminal, also in the Port of Rotterdam, labour shortages over the summer period, overlaid with a backlog of vessels around the Cape of Good Hope due to concentrated delays, have resulted in waiting times at the terminal extending to around 24 hours. However, it is expected that operations at the terminal will gradually return to full normal levels from week 35 onwards.
