MSC acquires UK logistics company
Date:2024-09-04 Readers:
On 2 September, Medlog, a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has completed the acquisition of UK logistics company Maritime Group.

The parties did not disclose the value of the transaction. According to the announcement, Maritime Group will continue to operate under its existing brand, supported by Medlog's new investment, and the management team, led by John Williams, will remain unchanged.
Søren Toft, CEO of MSC, said, ‘As we expand our footprint in the UK, this acquisition marks an exciting new chapter, combining Maritime Group's extensive knowledge with Medlog's expertise.’
‘Special thanks to John Williams and the entire Maritime Group team for their continued leadership and dedication. We look forward to a future of mutual growth and success.’
Maritime Group has been operating for 23 years, specialising in UK road and rail freight transport, with 3,000 employees and 41 business locations.

John Williams, Chairman of the Board of Maritime Group, said, ‘It is great to be part of an independent global logistics organisation securing the long term future of the business, and Medlog is able to provide ongoing investment to help us develop exciting plans for the growth of the company for all our stakeholders. We share a common heritage, culture, values and understanding with Medlog and we look forward to their support in realising the full potential of Maritime Group and its commitment to its employees, customers and suppliers.’

He added, ‘Maritime Group will continue to develop practical, technology-driven, infrastructure-led supply chain solutions and set high standards for service, ordering new electric trucks, and our rail sites will be open to existing and new customers.’
Giuseppe Prudente, Chairman of Medlog, said, ‘It is a pleasure to be expanding our logistics footprint in the U.K. Medlog specialises in multimodal transport, providing solutions in over 80 countries, and Maritime Group's wealth of knowledge, coupled with Medlog's investment and expertise, will be used in a way that is consistent with our values and respect for the environment to drive continued innovation in the UK's future logistics infrastructure.’

In short, in recent years, MSC has been frantically expanding its capacity, while at the same time being keen to transform itself into a provider of services that ‘builds large-scale logistics operations and delivers the full range of the supply chain’. In fact, Medlog was founded in 1988, and MSC has been entering the freight forwarding market through Medlog for more than three decades.

In October 2023, MSC acquired a 50 per cent stake in Italo, the Italian high-speed rail operator. Shortly before that, it also acquired 50% of the freight business of Renfe, the rail freight subsidiary of the Spanish Railways group of companies.

In November 2023, MSC and Italian rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato announced that they would form a new joint venture to design, build and operate new freight terminals at locations controlled by both groups in Italy.

Of particular note, in September 2023, MSC signed an agreement to acquire Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) in Germany, which will result in a 49.9 per cent stake in HHLA upon completion.

As a traditional family-owned company controlled by the Aponte family, MSC is not required to disclose its financial data and corporate strategy to the public, and is therefore also known as the most mysterious liner company in the industry.

MSC has made a series of big moves in recent years, demonstrating not only its continued investment in shipping under the leadership of Captain Gianluigi Aponte, but also its commitment to remain an ocean shipping company. But also, in an environment of uncertain markets, it has endeavoured to continue to improve the resilience and reliability of its supply chain through acquisitions and vertical expansion, providing ground-breaking air, land and sea freight and logistics solutions, and ensuring that it is able to be a long term partner to its customers' ambitions.
