MSC, Major Acquisitions!
Date:2024-09-09 Readers:
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) continues its acquisition spree.

By acquiring Maritime Group Limited and Maritime Transport, the UK's largest logistics group, MSC has further strengthened its land transport network. The acquisition was completed this Monday (2 September) by MSC's subsidiary, Swiss logistics operator MEDLOG, and the value of the deal has not yet been disclosed.

Maritime Transport employs around 3,000 people at 41 sites, including a network of strategic rail terminals. It also operates 1,600 container lorries and more than 30 daily rail services to and from major UK ports.

Soren Toft, MSC's chief executive, said the deal marks the formal integration of Maritime Group into the MSC family. This move is of invaluable importance to MSC as it expands its business in the U.K. Maritime Transport will continue to operate under its original brand and will be supported by MEDLOG's investment. The management team will continue to be led by John Williams, Executive Chairman of Maritime Group.

Williams said: ‘We are very pleased to be able to secure the long-term growth of the business. At MEDLOG we share a common heritage, culture, values and understanding and we look forward to their support.’

MSC is aiming for significant growth across its business, particularly in its liner business, where the company's latest figures from Alphaliner show that it is approaching a 20 per cent market share in the container shipping industry, with liner capacity of more than six million TEUs and a current order book of 1.8 million TEUs. On the shipping side, MSC also recently acquired Gram Car Carriers to enter the ro-ro sector.

However, MSC's acquisition and growth strategy is not limited to the shipping business. The company has also been active in acquiring large logistics companies in key regional markets.

MEDLOG was founded in 1988 and has grown as MSC's inland logistics partner, especially in Europe. Today, MEDLOG, through its rail freight division MEDWAY, controls the key rail infrastructure connecting the main ports in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and north-west Austria. This logistics business is set to expand further in the UK with the addition of a maritime business.

Earlier this year, Maritime Group was confirmed as the long-term operator of the West Midlands Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI), the largest logistics development in the UK. The site boasts 8 million sq ft of commercial space with an exclusive rail hub facility, a layout that will greatly facilitate the efficient transfer of large volumes of goods from road to the rail network.

CEVA Logistics, a globally recognised international freight forwarder owned by Duffy Lines (CMA CGM), also attempted to expand its UK logistics business this spring, having tried to acquire UK supply chain solutions company Wincanton earlier this year, but was blocked by US logistics company GXO Logistics. Since Brexit, the UK has increasingly become a growth market for many shipping and logistics companies.
