The first of its kind in the country and a successful sea trial!

Recently, the first domestic ship with existing main engine converted to methanol dual-fuel engine ‘Leading 1’ successfully completed the sea trial in Zhoushan waters. The result of the sea trial shows that the indicators of the methanol dual-fuel engine of ‘Leading 1’ meet the design requirements.

‘Leading 1’ carried out a 6-hour sea trial, mainly testing the operating parameters of methanol dual-fuel engine, fuel consumption, output power and ship's speed under various working conditions, and at the same time, debugging and verifying the newly added nitrogen system, foam system and pressure water mist system, etc., and the results of the trial were in line with the design standards. The test results are in line with the design standard.

At present, the global shipping industry is vigorously promoting the application of new green fuel substitution. Methanol, as a room temperature liquid fuel, is more secure than LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, etc., and has become the future development direction of new green fuels in the shipping industry. Hangzhou ship ‘Leading 1’ based on the decarbonisation process and the strong development of marine methanol fuel in the context of Zhejiang Ship Inspection Centre's guidance and Zhoushan Ship Inspection and Hangzhou Ship Inspection jointly participated in the first test water in service ship main engine methanol dual-fuel conversion work.

‘The biggest highlight of this project is the conversion of the main engine of the active operating ships to methanol dual-fuel main engine, China Classification Society issued the first certificate of conversion of the main engine of the active operating ships to the main engine of the methanol dual-fuel engine. In addition to the main engine conversion the main core technology of this project includes the addition of methanol fuel tank and filling station system, methanol fuel supply system, methanol fuel monitoring system, alarm and safety protection system, etc.’ Zhoushan City Ship Inspection Centre surveyor introduced.

The success of this conversion project is a major breakthrough in the field of ships to accelerate the development of new quality productivity, help local ship shipping green transformation and upgrading, but also for the development of green fuel for existing ships to provide a new track application, with good economic and social benefits, ‘It is estimated that after the transformation of the “leading 1” It is estimated that the retrofitted ‘Leading 1’ ship can save about 1/4 of the fuel cost, reduce carbon emissions by about 11.25%, and reduce the emission of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulphur compounds, and particulates, which will significantly improve the ship's operating economy and environmental emission indicators.’ ‘Leading 1’ ship Oriental responsible person said.
