Attention, conventional fuel shipowners calling at EU ports
Date:2024-10-10 Readers:
Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum and Finnish shipping company Wasaline recently signed a letter of intent to jointly plan the world's first large-scale commercial FuelEU Maritime pooling solution to provide pooling services to shipowners.
FuelEU Maritime is a union regulation aimed at increasing the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels and limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The regulation requires all shipowners of ships over 5,000 gross tons that dock at EU ports and carry passengers or cargo for commercial purposes to initially reduce the carbon intensity of purchased fuel by 2% from 2025, and the required emission reduction will gradually increase to 80% by 2050. To make it easier for shipping companies to comply, the regulation allows ships to voluntarily share emission reduction quotas, which means that qualified ships can bear emissions on their behalf, and compliance will also become a "service."

According to the letter of intent, Wasaline will provide ultra-compliant services to the pool by running its daily routes using bio-LNG; Gasum will be responsible for managing the pool, supplying ultra-low-emission bio-LNG, and providing ultra-compliant services to shipping companies operating traditional fuel ships. Bio-LNG is a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel with 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels during its life cycle and can be used in all the same occasions as natural gas.

By then, Wasaline's "Aurora Botnia" (built in 2021) will be put into operation. The ferry can run on batteries, LNG and bio-LNG, and can carry 800 passengers, transporting passengers and cargo between Finland and Sweden.

As an established bio-LNG producer and distributor, Gasum is able to guarantee sufficient ultra-low-emission fuel supply to Wasaline. At the same time, it said that the regular routes of the ferry bring predictability to the shared service, and its customers have shown "strong interest" in the pool service.

Gasum pointed out that this solution is the simplest and most reliable way for shipping companies to save compliance costs and promote the production of low-emission fuels, which will help the maritime industry comply with FuelEU maritime regulations.

Peter Stahlberg, CEO of Wasaline, said, "We are pleased to have the opportunity to participate in a solution that has the potential to increase the production and use of renewable biofuels. We prioritize innovation and sustainability in shipping and are pleased to help others reduce carbon emissions and promote the green transformation of the industry."

Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Gasum Maritime, pointed out that Gasum has a unique advantage in providing reliable full-service joint venture solutions for shipping companies. Its long-term experience and strong relationships in the maritime market provide it with a competitive advantage that other companies cannot match.

According to the official website, Gasum has 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden and has established long-term partnerships with many well-known biogas producers. The company plans to provide 7TWh of renewable natural gas to customers each year by 2027, which means reducing carbon dioxide emissions for its customers by about 1.8 million tons per year.
