Panama disputes US 'false' claims on canal fees
Date:2025-02-14 Readers:
THE Panama Canal Authority (ACP), which has sole control over transit tolls, disputed the US State Department's claims, stating that no fee modifications have been made, reports St Petersburg's PortNews.

Recently, the US State Department claimed that Panama had agreed to waive transit fees, which would save the US millions of dollars annually.

"The Panama Canal Authority, authorised to set tolls and other charges for transiting the canal, says it has made no adjustments to fees. However, the Panama Canal Authority, as previously stated, is willing to engage in dialogue with the relevant officials of the United States regarding the transit of military ships from that country," ACP said in its press release.

Naval use of the canal is low with 40 vessels transiting a year, or 0.3 per cent of total throughput with fees varying depending on the ship's displacement tonnage.

Said Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino: "They are making significant statements based on a falsehood, and that is intolerable, simply and plainly intolerable."

President Mulino also said unlike the exorbitant digits that have been alleged to be the 'real' sum of money that the US pays in tolls to the canal - the fees for American-flagged ships have been US$6 million to $7 million annually.
