Tokyo: NYK has inked a 12-year contract with BHP Billiton to ship iron ore from Western Australia to China. In its first long term with BHP the Japanese shipowner is expected to ship 2.7m tonnes of iron ore a year starting from 2013 utilising a 250,000 dwt ore carrier. In addition to the 12-year contract a three-year contract for a 200,000 dwt bulker started in April. “NYK will continue to make every effort to remain at the forefront of transport services in response to increasing demand for the stable transport of natural resources,” the company said.
