VIZHINJAM has handled 240 ships, 490,000 TEU cargo in its first fiscal year, reports Chennai's Hindu Daily.

In March 2025, Vizhinjam International Seaport handled 108,000 TEU from 51 vessels, showcasing its growing efficiency and operational excellence.

As the port wrapped up its first financial year of operations, it marked a significant milestone by handling a cumulative 492,000 TEU and facilitating the berthing of 240 vessels in less than nine months.

This achievement solidifies Vizhinjam's emergence as a major player in India's maritime sector.

Commercial operations commenced in December 2024, following trial runs that began in July 2024. Within just four months of launch, the port crossed the landmark of handling over one hundred thousand containers in a single month, a feat attributed to the strategic planning and technological capabilities of Adani Vizhinjam Port.

Port minister VN Vasavan credited the success to the integration of advanced systems and scalable infrastructure that ensured high reliability and rapid throughput.

In a significant development, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has approved environmental clearances for the port's second and third phases of expansion.

The expansion will include extending the container terminal to 1,200 metres, adding 900 metres to the breakwater, and constructing a 1,220-metre multipurpose berth and a 250-metre liquid berth with breakwater support.

Additional plans involve creating liquid cargo storage facilities and dredging around 7.2 million cubic metres of land across a 77.17-hectare area.

These developments position Vizhinjam as a future-ready seaport, poised to handle increased traffic and support India's ambitions in global trade logistics.
