ICTSI's Basra Terminal handles its first 16,010-TEUer
Date:2025-05-09 Readers:

BASRA Gateway Terminal (BGT), a subsidiary of Manila's International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI), handled the 16,010-TEU HMM Daon, marking the largest container vessel to dock at Iraq's Port of Umm Qasr, reports the Manila Times.

The vessel's arrival highlighted the terminal's capacity to accommodate ultra-large container vessels, further cementing BGT's role in Iraq's growing trade and logistics sector.

The HMM Daon has a beam of 51 metres, an overall length of 365 metres, and a gross tonnage of 152,003. The ship is part of the Premiere Alliance consortium, which includes HMM, Yang Ming, and Ocean Network Express, and serves key import routes from China and the Far East.

The terminal's ability to handle such a vessel reflects ongoing investments in infrastructure and equipment. BGT has deployed three postpanamax ship-to-shore cranes, which, along with a skilled local workforce, enable the efficient handling of large vessels at Iraq's busiest port.

Under ICTSI's management since 2014, BGT has evolved into a high-performing multipurpose terminal that caters to containerized, project, and roll-on/roll-off cargo.

It remains the only terminal in Umm Qasr with the infrastructure capable of efficiently servicing vessels with capacities of up to 16,000 TEU.
