Hutchison Ports BEST to invest US$11m to upgrade Spanish box terminal
Date:2025-05-22 Readers:
HUTCHISON Ports BEST has begun to upgrade works of the Intermodal Terminal of Navarra (TIN) where it will make an investment of around EUR10 million (US$11 million) for the improvement and expansion of the terminal area.

BEST, the main container terminal of the Port of Barcelona and the largest private investment in the history of the Spanish port system, won in September 2024 the concession from ADIF for the operation of the facilities located in Noain for the next fifteen years.

Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST said that "we are very proud to start this expansion work of a project that began thirteen years ago in the same place with an inoperative terminal, and in which, as a result of our vision and the support from our customers, synergy has managed to connect the Port of Barcelona with six weekly frequencies".

After several months of work on the site study and the construction project, the expansion work has begun to almost triple the current space of the terminal to the projected 42,000 square meters, the company said in a statement.

The project includes the construction of two new tracks of 550 metres each with a new esplanade of larger surface area for railway operations and container depot. The work will be completed before the end of this year.

Within this framework, part of the investment will be allocated to the replacement of the current diesel reach stackers with fully electric ones within TIN's facilities, which will help TIN users to decarbonise their logistics chain.

Mr Belcastro added that "this investment will enhance connectivity for exporters and importers in northern Spain and southern France with more than 200 ports through the Port of Barcelona, benefiting from a competitive, reliable and sustainable service; achieving more robust supply chains to face uncertainty."
