South Korea's seaport cargo volumes declined in the second quarter as global trade uncertainties weighed on exports and imports, though container traffic showed modest growth, reported Yonhap.
Cargo processed at South Korean seaports fell 2.2 per cent year-on-year to 387.76 million tons in the April-June period, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Tuesday. Export-import cargo dropped 1.7 per cent to 331.36 million tons.
Container cargo rose 1.9 per cent to 8.26 million TEU, with export-import containers slipping 0.6 per cent to 4.53 million TEU. Export cargo fell 1 per cent to 2.26 million TEU, while imports edged down 0.2 per cent to 2.28 million TEU, amid reduced shipments to and from the US, China and Vietnam.
Transshipment cargo rose 5.3 per cent to 3.7 million TEU, reflecting South Korea's continued role as a regional hub. Non-container cargo declined 3.2 per cent to 247.07 million tons.
Oil volumes rose 1.3 per cent and auto shipments increased three per cent, partially offsetting the broader downturn in seaport throughput.
