INTERCARGO, GCMD join forces to decarbonise
Date:2025-08-21 Readers:
The International Association of Dry Bulk Shipowners (INTERCARGO) and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) have signed a two-year agreement to accelerate green innovation in the world's largest shipping segment.

Dry bulk shipping, which accounts for over 40 per cent of global fleet tonnage, faces unique decarbonisation challenges - especially for small and medium-sized owners operating unpredictable "tramp" routes.

The partnership combines GCMD's technical expertise and pilot project experience with INTERCARGO's operational knowledge and access to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), aiming to overcome barriers to adopting energy-efficient technologies (EETs) and low-carbon fuels.

GCMD is conducting onboard trials to validate fuel savings and develop financing models like Pay-As-You-Save (PAYS), which links repayments to verified fuel efficiency gains.

INTERCARGO chairman Dimitris Monioudis emphasised the importance of scalable solutions, saying the collaboration ensures practical technologies reach shipowners transporting the world's essential cargoes.
