The global containership orderbook has climbed to an all-time high of 10.4 million TEU after a surge in new vessel orders over the past year, raising concerns about oversupply, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
Linerlytica data showed the orderbook now equals 31.7 per cent of the existing fleet, the highest ratio since 2010. The last time levels were this high, between 2004 and 2009, the market endured a decade-long supply glut.
More than one million TEU of additional orders are expected before year-end, further swelling the pipeline. Analysts warn that if demand growth fails to match deliveries, the industry could face prolonged pressure on freight and charter rates.
