Taiwan's Evergreen Marine has confirmed an order for 14 liquefied natural gas-fuelled containerships costing up to US$2.9 billion, reports London's S&P Global.
The carrier said each 14,000-TEU vessel will cost between $175 million and $205 million. Seven ships will be built by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and seven by China's Guangzhou Shipyard International.
The orders were approved at an Evergreen Marine (Asia) board meeting and disclosed in a filing to the Taiwan stock exchange. The move ends speculation among shipbrokers that Evergreen was preparing a major fleet expansion.
Fleet data from Sea-web shows the new ships will add 196,000 TEU to Evergreen's capacity, lifting its total to 2,747,549 TEU.
The expansion will allow Evergreen to surpass Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express, making it the fifth-largest container line globally, up from seventh place.
