Port Everglades sets record as rail hub lifts cargo
Date:2025-11-24 Readers:
Port Everglades handled more than one million TEU in fiscal-year 2015, a five per cent rise on the previous year, reported Milwaukee's Progressive Railroading. Officials said the increase was driven by new shipping services and the first full year of operations at Florida East Coast Railway's (FECR) intermodal transfer facility.

The Broward County port moved 1,060,506 TEU, surpassing its earlier annual high. The 43-acre rail facility, located near the docks, was built through a partnership between FECR, the county and the state of Florida, and has improved the speed and efficiency of container transfers.

Port Director Steven Cernak said investments in rail and road links were helping customers expand trade. He highlighted upgrades to FECR's yard and roadway connections as key to strengthening the port's land-side access.

Cargo flows also benefited from the opening of the Eller Drive Overpass, which connects Interstate 595 directly to the port's main gate. The US$42.5 million project by the Florida Department of Transportation allows trucks to bypass new rail tracks leading into the FECR yard, easing congestion and improving.
