Hapag-Lloyd's new 16,800-TEU ships to feature TMC systems
Date:2025-11-25 Readers:
Norway's TMC Compressors will supply compressed air systems for 12 alternative fuel-ready containerships being built for Hapag-Lloyd in China, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy. The 16,800 TEU vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029.

The contract with Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding covers a pair of compressors for each ship, including one frequency-controlled unit linked to the selective catalytic reduction system, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.

The newbuilds will also be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on liquefied gas, biomethane, and convertible to ammonia. Together with TMC's technology, the ships are expected to achieve major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Hapag-Lloyd said ammonia could nearly eliminate carbon dioxide and significantly reduce Sulphur oxides, while biomethane could deliver well-to-wake reductions in emissions of up to 80-100 per cent compared with conventional fuels.

The Hamburg-based carrier currently operates 305 containerships with a combined capacity of about 2.5 million TEU. It has increasingly invested in eco-friendly tonnage, focusing on alternative fuels such as LNG and methanol.

Earlier this year, Hapag-Lloyd welcomed the 12th and final vessel of its Hamburg Express class, the 23,664-TEU Wilhelmshaven Express, built by South Korea's Hanwha Ocean and christened in October.
