Cargo handling at the Port of Los Angeles returned to normal over the weekend after an electrical fire aboard the 8,212-TEU ONE Henry Hudson forced four terminals to shut temporarily, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
The blaze broke out while the vessel was docked at Yusen Terminals. The port said all six terminals were operating as usual after four were closed overnight and reopened the next day.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said the fire began on a lower deck about 6:30pm and spread to multiple decks. Hazardous materials in some containers intensified the flames, but none of the 23 crew members or firefighting personnel were injured.
Yusen had no gates scheduled over the weekend. All ship-to-shore cranes were inspected, and cargo handling resumed on the first shift, said Alan McCorkle, Yusen's president and CEO. He added that the outage did not create a backlog of containers.
The ONE Henry Hudson was towed about one mile into open water, where firefighting and salvage operations continued, according to authorities.
