Global shipping profits plunge as market stabilises
Date:2025-12-04 Readers:

Global shipping profits fell sharply in 2025-Q3, with combined EBIT of major carriers dropping to US$5.12 billion from $17.06 billion a year earlier, reports London's Port Technology International.

Despite the correction, earnings remain above pre-pandemic levels, signalling a sustainable new normal. Sea-Intelligence data showed six of seven carriers increased transported volumes, aided by new vessel deliveries and reworked service networks. These adjustments helped absorb longer Red Sea transit times without the panic-pricing seen in 2024.

Cosco recorded the highest EBIT per TEU at US$350, followed by ZIM at $280. They were the only carriers to maintain profitability above $200 per TEU.

Other major lines saw margins compress below $100 per TEU. ONE posted $85, Maersk $83 and Hapag-Lloyd $65. By contrast, the lowest EBIT per TEU among them in 2024-Q3 was $335, highlighting the depth of the correction.

Analysts noted schedule reliability fell sharply in October after three months of stability, underscoring continued volatility in the global shipping market.
