Mediterranean Shipping Company has signed a new Terminal Service Agreement with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to strengthen operations at Colombo, reported Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
The agreement, announced on 9 December, was described as a practical step to improve operational clarity, service efficiency and capacity planning as throughput is expected to rise.
SLPA terminals handled a record 2.41 million TEU in 2024, while overall Port of Colombo throughput reached 7.78 million TEU, supported by private operators South Asia Gateway Terminals and Colombo International Container Terminal. The authority linked the growth to ongoing works at the Colombo East and West terminals.
In November, SLPA highlighted progress at the Colombo East Container Terminal, where pre-test operations at the second berth enabled simultaneous berthing of the MSC China and MSC Manasa F. The authority said the berth will allow concurrent handling of multiple large vessels.
MSC, headquartered in Geneva and founded in 1970, operates a global container fleet serving hundreds of trade routes and ports. SLPA, created under the 1979 Ports Authority Act, manages Sri Lanka's major commercial ports and oversees both state-run and privately operated container terminals.
