Global vessel cascading has entered a new phase, with surplus tonnage now pushed into secondary trades after Asia-Europe lanes reached saturation, reports Saint Petersburg PortNews.
Sea-Intelligence analysed more than 16,000 vessel transfers across 2024-2025. The company said the Asia-Mediterranean trade, which absorbed displaced Asia-North Europe capacity last year, is now cascading vessels outward.
The Mediterranean-North America East Coast route was the largest net gainer in 2025-2H, receiving 127,686 TEU. This was driven by 178,189 TEU shifted from Asia-Mediterranean, including 11 vessels of 14,000-15,000 TEU.
The Asia-East Coast South America route ranked second, with a net gain of 112,998 TEU. Most of these were 8,000-14,000 TEU vessels exiting the main East-West trades.
Sea-Intelligence noted that 97 per cent of vessels did not return to previous routes, signalling what it views as a permanent structural change in global capacity allocation.
