CMA CGM has named the CMA CGM Eugenie, a 15,000-TEU dual fuel methanol vessel, marking a milestone in its fleet renewal strategy, reports Amsterdam area's Breakbulk News.
The ship was christened under the command of Captain Svilen Santana, with Shanghai Maritime University Professor Bai Xiangn as godmother and CMA CGM China general manager Esra Bora present at the ceremony.
The vessel highlights how fuel strategy has become a board-level issue for liner shipping as regulatory pressure and customer scrutiny on emissions intensify.
Following delivery, the Eugenie will operate on the Phoenician Express service linking Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Methanol dual fuel capability allows the ship to switch between conventional fuel and methanol depending on availability.
The flexibility spreads operational risk but raises questions for ports and suppliers about methanol availability and pricing volatility.
The presence of senior maritime academics and executives at the ceremony underscores that the shift to alternative fuels is structural and already advancing along major east-west trade routes.
