Zhoukou Port opens central operating area with automation
Date:2026-01-07 Readers:

Henan Province has launched its first dedicated container terminal at Zhoukou Port, reports Chicago's PR Newswire.

The Central Operating Area of Zhoukou Port's Central Port Zone began operations on December 24 with an annual handling capacity of one million TEU. Twelve automated cranes and an integrated automation system built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC) were commissioned.

The project is part of Henan's "11246" inland waterway initiative and includes 13 berths for 2,000-ton vessels. Designed throughput is 1.075 million TEU, positioning Zhoukou as a multimodal hub linking central and western China with the Yangtze River Delta.

ZPMC supplied six ship-to-shore cranes and six rail-mounted gantry cranes adapted for inland waterways. The STS cranes feature lightweight designs, while the RMG cranes use an "8-rope 2.0" anti-sway system with 120-second cycle times.

The automation system integrates management and control software across vessel, yard and transport operations. It replaces labour-intensive workflows with real-time digital coordination.

Productivity of the STS cranes is expected to rise 30 per cent, with each capable of handling 120,000 TEU annually. Officials said the project provides a scalable model for modernising inland port operations across China.
