MMC Ports hits 20 million TEU in 2025
Date:2026-01-15 Readers:

MMC Ports, Malaysia's largest port operator and a unit of MMC Corporation, recorded a milestone in 2025 by surpassing 20 million TEU across its network, reported Kuala Lumpur's Malaysian Reserve.

The achievement was driven by strong performances at Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Johor Port, Northport, Penang Port and Tanjung Bruas Port. The group credited transformation, digitalisation, infrastructure expansion and workforce development for the results.

PTP became the first Malaysian port to exceed 13 million and 14 million TEU in a single year. It also set records of 189,306 container moves in a week, 15,041 moves in a 12-hour shift and 1,442 moves in an hour. PTP was named the world's fastest growing port in the first half of 2025 by Alphaliner.

Northport posted its highest annual throughput of 3.8 million TEU and 12.9 million freight weight tonnes of conventional cargo. Johor Port handled 1.08 million TEU, while Penang Port carried 3.13 million ferry passengers, up nearly nine per cent from 2024. Tanjung Bruas Port recorded 31,032 TEU, its highest since 2019.

Expansion projects included new cranes and yard capacity at PTP and Northport, liquid jetties and quay cranes at Johor Port, and hybrid RTGs at Penang Port. MMC Ports said these investments boosted efficiency and sustainability.

Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said surpassing 20 million TEU reflects years of disciplined investment and partnerships. Chief executive Azman Shah Mohd Yusof added the record year shows the success of transformation initiatives and provides momentum for future growth. 2026 will mark MMC Ports' 20th anniversary.
