Melbourne posts 10.9pc box volume increase in '25
Date:2026-02-09 Readers:

The Port of Melbourne reported a 10.9 per cent year-on-year rise in container throughput for December 2025, handling 314,000 TEU, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.

Full container imports excluding Bass Strait traffic climbed to 125,000 TEU, up 8.5 per cent, driven by stronger furniture, home appliances and paperboard volumes compared with the same month last year.

Full container exports excluding Bass Strait rose to 60,000 TEU, an 18 per cent increase. Non-container trade reached 2.09 million revenue tonnes, up 7.8 per cent year-on-year, or 152,000 tonnes higher than December 2024.

December marked a rebound for the port, with both container and non-container volumes rising to close out the year strongly.

In October 2025, the Port of Melbourne was named a Sector Leader in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark Infrastructure Asset Assessment.

Two months later, the port released its 2025 Sustainability Report highlighting achievements and progress during FY25.
