As of 14 August 2026, the global fleet of operational container vessels has grown to 7,628 ships, an increase of 36 vessels from last month, according to Alphaliner's latest statistics. Worldwide operational capacity now stands at 34,593,141 TEU, up 165,169 TEU, with a total vessel tonnage of 411,443,648 deadweight tonnes.
The rankings of the top twenty liner companies have shifted slightly. Global Feeder Shipping LLC moved up to 17th place, displacing IRISL to 18th. Sinokor Merchant Marine rose to 19th, while T.S. Lines entered the 20th spot, replacing UAE Shipping, which exited the top twenty.
CMA CGM recorded the largest operational capacity growth, adding 24,806 TEU despite reducing its fleet by five vessels. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) followed closely, increasing capacity by 24,698 TEU with four additional ships. Evergreen Marine expanded by 16,556 TEU with one new vessel, Pacific International Lines added 15,590 TEU across two ships, and Global Feeder Shipping gained 14,459 TEU with five more vessels.
Conversely, three carriers - X-Press Feeders, COSCO Shipping, and Sinokor Merchant Marine - saw reductions in operational capacity.
MSC significantly expanded its newbuild orderbook, adding 13 vessels with a combined capacity of 327,686 TEU, far surpassing other carriers. Yang Ming Marine Transport ordered six ships totaling 78,000 TEU, and Wan Hai Lines added seven vessels equating to 77,490 TEU.
Meanwhile, KMTC Line reduced its order count by four ships but still increased its committed capacity by 15,774 TEU. Other carriers, including CMA CGM, Ocean Network Express, Evergreen Marine, ZIM, and Maersk, scaled back their newbuild commitments, reflecting a shift toward integrating recently delivered vessels into their fleets rather than expanding further.
These developments highlight the continued growth of the global container fleet, driven by strategic expansions among leading carriers and shifts in operational priorities as companies balance capacity additions with measured network absorption.
