The construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center reached a milestone at the end of 2009, with 27 projects out of 59 completed and the remainder under way.

In 2009, the Port of Shanghai, the largest container port in China, handled 590 million tons of dry bulk goods to rank No 1 in the world and also ranked No 2 for handling 25 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers.

China wants to build Shanghai into a global shipping hub by 2020. Last year, the eastern metropolis completed several important infrastructure projects. Several road construction projects have been finished, including the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge. The A32 and G60 highway projects were completed and started operations.

The sixth phase of the Waigaoqiao project was under construction, and the early phase of the Yangshan Deepwater Harbor Project was officially launched. The expansion of Shanghai Hongqiao Airport was approaching completion and nearing preparations for test operations.
