Chongqing rail container terminal starts operation

THE first phase of the new rail container terminal located in Chongqing's Shapingba District has been completed and commenced operations, reports Xinhua.

This is the third of the 18 planned rail container terminal in China by Chinese Ministry of Railway after the Shanghai and Kunming terminal.

Construction was started on the terminal in October 2007, entailing an investment of CNY770 million (US$112.8 million). It covers 150.9 hectares, 60 of which are earmarked for container handling.

After completion of all phases, the terminal will have a 1.65 million TEU annual capacity, eight rail lines, two container yards, an area for reefer boxes, and be able to load and unload four trains at the same time. The completed first phase has an annual capacity of 480,000 TEU.
