SHANGHAI'S century-old Jiangnan Shipyard will turn its pavilion at the World Expo 2010 into the city's largest ship museum when the Expo ends, top officials of the shipyard said.
A former welding workshop will form the basis of the 7,000-square-meter pavilion built on the shipyard's original site along the Huangpu River.
The yard has since moved to Changxing Island.
More than 2,000 old machines and ships dating from 1920s will be shown for the first time in the new museum, which will exhibit many "cultural relics" found during the shipyard's move in 2008.
These include the earliest cutting machines and some parts of the "Dongfeng Ship," China's first 10,000-ton cargo ship built in 1965, said Gong Hanming, Party chief of the shipyard.
The shipyard will renovate the pavilion after the Expo and open the museum in 2011, Gong said.
