US air cargo security rules 'daft', declares BA chairman Broughton
Date:2011-04-27 Readers:

NEW American air cargo security rules mean that freight must re-screened and require additional resources that could lead to theft and hygiene risks, says BA chairman Martin Broughton.

Delivering the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Aviation Lecture, Sir Martin said the new rules had been introduced just six days before they were to be applied on US-bound goods.

Sir Martin also questioned why airport security in Britain needed to be so much more complex than that in the rest of Europe, reported London's Logistics Manager.

"The difference between the UK and the European baseline consists of 168 pages of UK regulation including 200 additional More Stringent Measures. Many of the differences are trivial - so why have them?" he said.

Instead of adding burdensome rules on the existing structure "every time there is a new security incident", he called for the adoption of a holistic technique to replace the "one-size-fits-all"' approach in force today.
