Extension of logistics partnership with LSG Sky Chefs
Date:2009-08-03 Readers:

Kuehne + Nagel has been selected by LSG Sky Chefs, the world’s largest provider of in-flight services, to manage its Malpensa airport-related supply chain activities. Under the three-year contract Kuehne + Nagel will be responsible for managing goods inbound services to LSG Sky Chefs’ customer service centre at Milan Malpensa, including the multi-temperature warehouse in the airport area. Supply chain services comprise storage (mix between stocked and just-in-time flows), handling, order preparation by unit, and delivery to the LSG Sky Chefs’ catering operation area, which serves more than 25 airlines taking off from Malpensa.

Services also cover customs formalities for inbound and outbound materials (air, sea and overland transport), as well as value-added services such as IT support for planning, visibility of the supply chain and controlling functions. Additionally, in close cooperation with SkylogistiX, the joint venture between LSG Sky Chefs and Kuehne + Nagel, selected supply chain management functions are being provided, such as supplier order and call-off management, stock level and distribution management.

The Kuehne + Nagel’s team will handle approximately 160,000 tons of cargo per year representing 3,800 items, including consumable products such as drinks and foods (ranging from biscuits and other dry foods up to fresh and frozen foods) as well as equipment products. Depending on the airline, a total of up to 350 different articles may need to be provided in the aircraft before the scheduled departure time.

In order to manage a time-sensitive distribution pattern and meet customer specific delivery windows, the facility operates around the clock, 365 days a year.

Silvio Canettoli, LSG Sky Chefs Regional COO for Mediterranean and Africa, comments: “We have selected Kuehne + Nagel because this company understands well the in-flight logistics business, and we are confident that our cooperation will over time deliver the expected results.”

Ruggero Poli, Managing Director of Kuehne + Nagel Italy, states: “This new contract is exciting for us as it further cements Kuehne + Nagel’s longstanding cooperation with LSG Sky Chefs in various countries throughout the world. It also demonstrates our abilities to provide production-feeding logistics services inside the catering units.”
