Date:2011-05-18 Readers:

GUIZHOU, one of southwest China's major traffic hubs, is to see the mileage of its expressways in operation surpass 2,000 kilometres by the end of this year, Xinhua reports.

As of the end of last year, Guizhou had 1,500 kilometres of expressways in operation. This year, the province plans to launch eight projects with a total distance of 494 kilometres including three national expressways and five provincial expressways. These projects will be completed before year's end.

In the first quarter of this year, Guizhou spent CNY11 billion (US$1.7 billion) on traffic infrastructure. CNY10.3 billion was spent on expressways, a sharp increase of 152.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

In the coming five years, the province will accomplish its target of building expressways to create another 4,500 kilometres of expressways.
